Mohammad Reza Shajarian is a vocal master whose works are undoubtedly an undeniable part of the audio heritage of Iranian music.
Mohammad Reza Shajarian (born September 23, 1940 in Mashhad) was a musician, composer, singer and calligrapher, an artist who managed to leave lasting works for Iranian music during his six decades of artistic activity.
Shajarian has also been active in reciting the Qur'an and Rabbana's prayer (Our Lord) was his most famous Qur'anic recitation. This work has been registered as a national work by the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization.
In 1932, for the first time, the sound of his recitation of the Quran was broadcast on Radio Khorasan. He went to the college in Mashhad in 1959 and from that year he met a music teacher for the first time. After receiving his diploma, he was employed in Education Ministry and began teaching. At this time, he became acquainted with the hammered dulcimer and began learning the instrument with Jalal Akhbari.
He met Ahmad Ebadi in 1967 and participated in Esmail Mehrtash's class. In the same year, he went to Ebrahim Bouzari to study calligraphy at the Calligraphers Association. Shajarian continued calligraphy with Hassan Mirkhani since 1968. In 1969, he obtained an excellent degree in calligraphy.
Until 1971, at the request of his father, who wanted the Shajarian family to be better known for reciting the Qur'an and being a religious figure, Mohammad Reza Shajarian worked with the radio under the pseudonym Siavash Bidgani, but after that his father allowed him to use his real name. He was employed in Education Ministry until 1968.
In 1972, he met Noor Ali Khan Boroumand in the Golha program and learned the vocal style of Seyyed Hossein Taherzadeh from him. From 1973, he studied his classical vocal style and composition with Abdullah Davami. In the same year, along with a group of artists such as Mohammad Reza Lotfi, Nasser Farhangfar, Hossein Alizadeh, Jalal Zolfanoun and Davood Ganjahai, he became a member of the Center for the Preservation and Dissemination of Music under the direction of Dariush Safvat.
Mohammad Reza Shajarian was ranked first in the national Quran recitation competition in 1977.
In 1991, Mohammad Reza Shajarian, in collaboration with Dariush Pirniakan, Morteza Ayan and Jamshid Andalibi, held concerts on European and American tours, which resulted in the albums Payam Nasim, Del Majnoon and Sarve Chaman.
In 1999, Mohammad Reza Shajarian received the Picasso Prize from UNESCO.
The Legion of Honour was awarded to Shajarian in an official ceremony on the evening of July 23, 2014 at the French Embassy in Tehran. In this ritual; Shajarian received the High Order of the Ministry of Culture and Arts of the French Government from Bruno Foucher, the French Ambassador to Tehran.
In 1999, Mohammad Reza Shajarian received the Picasso Prize and the Diploma of Honor from UNESCO in Paris. This award is given every five years to an artist who strives to promote the culture and art of his country. Mohammad Reza Shajarian received the Mozart Award from UNESCO in 2006.
He was nominated for 2 albums for a Grammy Award.; Every year, 5 music albums from the classical music section are nominated for this award.
