Iran Press/ Europe: The International Space Station, which is a model of international cooperation between Europe, Japan, the US and Russia, was established in 1998.
Russia plays a key role in keeping the station in orbit, but some of its spacecraft have been affected by new Western sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine conflict.
Russia has decided to quit the International Space Station (ISS) after 2024 and focus on creating its own orbital outpost, according to the newly-appointed chief of the country’s space agency.
“Of course, we will fulfill all our obligations to our partners, but the decision to leave this station after 2024 has been made,” Roscosmos Director General Yury Borisov told Russian President Vladimir Putin in comments released by the Kremlin on Tuesday.
Borisov's statement reaffirmed previous declarations by Russian space officials about Moscow's intention to leave the space station after 2024 when the current international arrangements for its operation end.
NASA and other international partners hope to keep the space station running until 2030, while the Russians have been reluctant to make commitments beyond 2024.
