Russia has voiced strong opposition to a joint military exercise between the United States and Armenia, raising concerns about escalating tensions in the South Caucasus region.

Iran PressEurope: Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized the drills, named "Eagle Partner 2024," stating that American involvement "will only fuel the conflict potential persisting in the region, and create new dividing lines."

This condemnation comes amid strained relations between Russia and Armenia. Zakharova pointed to Armenia's recent actions, including freezing its activities in the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization and publicly criticizing the organization. These moves, coupled with the US-Armenia drills, caused "regrets and alarm" for Russia, according to Zakharova.

She further accused the West of pursuing geopolitical aims in the South Caucasus, aiming to "eliminate all the peaceful trends that are already gaining momentum in the region." Zakharova suggested these efforts target not just Russia, but also Iran and Türkiye.

Zakharova's comments highlight Russia's concerns about Western influence on Armenia. She alleged that the US drills aim to impose "NATO standards" on the Armenian military and ultimately grant the West greater control over Armenia's domestic and foreign policy.
