Why it matters:
The exchange comes after a fragile three-month ceasefire, raising fears of renewed conflict following repeated Israeli aggressions across Lebanon and renewed genocide in Gaza. Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has warned that continued escalation could drag the country into a devastating war.
The big picture:
Israeli air defenses reportedly intercepted three of the five incoming rockets, though explosions were heard in the area.
The incident follows months of repeated Israeli aggressions inside Lebanon despite a ceasefire.
Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir has warned the military will "respond severely."
What he’s saying:
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam released a statement warning of the potential for renewed fighting after a three-month ceasefire.
“All security and military measures must be taken to show that Lebanon decides on matters of war and peace,” Salam said.
Attacks risk “dragging the country into a new war, which will bring woes to Lebanon and the Lebanese people”, he said.
Go deeper:
Lebanon’s official National News Agency (NNA) says Israeli warplanes flew over eastern areas of southern Lebanon after rockets were launched toward northern Israel.
Israeli ground troops were strafing the el-Hamames hills with automatic weapon fire, NNA reported. Israeli artillery fire targeted the Nabatieh district in the south and the town of Khiam, which was hit by “three shells [fired by] Merkava tanks”.
The military also fired automatic weapons at the border villages of Hula, Markaba and Kfar Kila, it said.
