Why it matters:
As the Israeli regime’s genocidal campaign in Gaza intensifies, protests in Muslim-majority countries are growing louder. The demonstration in Islamabad reflects the deepening anger over violations of international law and humanitarian norms.
The big picture:
The rally, organized by the Pak-Palestine Forum, saw citizens holding placards against the U.S.-Israel alliance, reading that both countries are disregarding ceasefire agreements. The timing of the the renrewed Israeli genocide, during the holy month of Ramadan, further inflamed tensions.
What they’re saying:
Dr. Osama Athar, Pak-Palestine Forum leader: "We are here to support the Palestinian people and Hamas fighters, demanding that our government stop Israel’s oppressive hand."
Malik Idrees, Tehreek-e-Mohammadiya leader: "Israel broke the ceasefire—only cowards do that. The Muslim Ummah must unite to protect Palestine and Bait Al-Muqaddas."
Faryal Nawaz, student leader: "The massacre in Gaza is a crime against humanity. As long as this genocide continues, we will keep raising our voices."
Go deeper:
Pakistan has historically been vocal in its support for Palestine, but with the Israeli genocide intensifying, the government faces increasing pressure from activists to take stronger action. While Islamabad has condemned Israeli actions at the international level, protesters are demanding concrete steps, including economic and political measures, to push back against unchecked aggression.
