Iran Press/West Asia: Demonstrators gathered in the Omayyad Square in Damascus, demanding the intervention of the United Nations and the international community for the release of their children from prisons.
One of the protesters emphasized, "We call on the United Nations and human rights organizations to release the prisoners in Aleppo, Raqqa, Hasakah, Al-Bukamal, and other areas, especially former regime elements including soldiers and officers."
In related news, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that during a security operation by the Syrian Transitional Government's Military Operations Directorate and Ministry of Interior in Homs city and surrounding villages, 500 people were arrested.
The report indicated that among those detained were officers and personnel who had reconciled with the new government but were arrested. Some of them were reportedly tortured and mistreated during their arrest and transfer to security facilities.
On December 7, 2024, armed opposition groups in Syria initiated operations in the northwestern, western, and southwestern regions of Aleppo with the aim of removing Bashar al-Assad from power. After eleven days, on December 18, opposition forces declared their control over Damascus and announced Assad's departure from the country.
