Montreal (IP) - In a show of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, a pro-Palestine encampment has been set up in Montreal's Square Victoria, which was named after a British monarch.

Iran PressAmerica: The activists behind the encampment, organized by the group Disinvest for Palestine, are demanding that the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), a major Canadian pension fund with offices near the encampment, stop financing Israel's actions in Gaza, which they describe as genocide.

The CDPQ, the second-largest pension fund in Canada with $432 billion in assets, currently holds $14.2 billion in investments in 87 companies that the activists say are complicit in the ongoing conflict.

In a show of solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for freedom, the organizers have named the encampment "le Campement populaire Al-Soumoud," which translates to "the Popular Steadfastness Encampment."

This is the first such encampment in Canada to be established on public property, rather than on a university campus.

The establishment of this encampment in a prominent public space in Montreal follows a long history of activism in the city, including the Occupy Wall Street movement, which also occupied this same square over a decade ago.

The activists' demands and the continued presence of the encampment in the heart of Montreal's financial district underscore the growing support for the Palestinian cause in Canada and the desire to hold institutions accountable for their involvement in the conflict.
