The number of victims is expected to increase, according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the head of Indonesia's disaster management department.
The deadly tremor was 31 kilometers (19 miles) deep and struck near Loloan on the north end of Lombok. It was also felt on Bali to the west, according to Reuters.
Indonesia's Tsunami Early Warning System had issued a tsunami warning after the main quake but it was later lifted, according to the country's National Disaster Management Agency.
More than 100 aftershocks have rattled Lombok since the main tremor, which was so powerful it was felt on the neighbouring island of Bali.
Indonesia, which straddles the Pacific’s “Ring of Fire,” is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In January, a-magnitude-6.1 earthquack struck off the southern coast of Java, Indonesia’s main island, rocking buildings in the country’s capital, Jakarta, and sending people fleeing into the streets.
In December 2004, a magnitude-9.1 earthquake off Sumatra set off a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries,according to NewYork Times.
