Dhaka (IP) - Opposition political parties including BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami are observing a nationwide 48-hour total blockade demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the cancellation of the 12th parliamentary election schedule.

On the first day of the blockade by the opposition alliance, no buses left the Syedabad and Mohakhali bus terminals, one of the largest in Dhaka.

BNP-Jamaya and their coalition partners held a protest march in the capital in support of the blockade.

There was a heavy presence of police in front of the central office of BNP, the country's main opposition political party. The police were on alert in the central office area to deal with any situation.

The capital was largely empty during the opposition party's siege. Apart from rickshaws, CNG autorickshaws, and private cars, public transport was relatively less. The same picture was on the highway. The highway was very empty as there were no inter-district buses plying from Dhaka.

228 platoons of BGB have been deployed to control the law and order situation and ensure public safety across the country. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members are seen patrolling the Dhaka-Chittagong highway to prevent any kind of sabotage.

Due to the blockade, there was very little traffic on the road. Due to the lack of vehicles, common people are seen waiting for a long time to reach their destination.

Members of the elite force RAB were on alert at various places on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

On the other hand, the court denied bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. As a result, the top leader of the BNP has to stay in jail.
