Iran Press/ Africa: Bola Ahmad Tinubu, a 71-year-old Muslim from Lagos State of South Western Nigeria have on Monday taken charge as the 16th president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in an inauguration ceremony in which many countries' leaders and representatives attended, including Iran's Vice-President for Legal Affairs, Mohammad Dehgan who led a delegation of Iranian Government in the inauguration that took place in Abuja.
Chief Justice of the Federation, Olukayode Ariwoola administered the oath of office to the President shortly after the Vice President, Kashim Shetima took his oath of office in the ceremony held at Eagle Square, Abuja.
In his speech after the swearing-in, President Bola Ahmad Tinubu announced that his government will remove all the fuel subsidies.
"We commend the decision of the outgoing administration in phasing out the petrol subsidy regime which has increasingly favoured the rich more than the poor. Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources. We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions,” he said.
Immediately after the inauguration and the announcement of the fuel subsidy removal, petrol stations started witnessing long queues as many private stations stopped selling the fuel.
Tinubu said his predecessor and former President Muhammadu Buhari has done his best for Nigeria.
Nigerians who are happy about the termination of former President Buhari's administration have expressed their displeasure with the previous government, saying it was full of failure.
In an interview with Iran Press during the inauguration, Mika'il Bala, a university student said: "We still have a lot to do in Nigeria. Human rights organisations and the International Community have to pay more attention in Nigeria. We have seen instances where Courts have given orders for the release of many people but they are still in prisons. I think a lot has to be done and improved in terms of respect for judiciary and in terms of respects for human rights. What I think for the new administration is, it should respect democracy. Democracy we know is a system of government that gives full power to all three arms of government. But in the previous administration (of Muhammadu Buhari), the judiciary was being marginalised and as we give an example, the Zaria massacre and the rest of them are really things that should stop in Nigeria and never be repeated in this country that says there is freedom."
28 state governors also were Sworn in on Monday while the other eight governors have different date of elections and inaugurations.
President Bola Ahmad Tinubu of All Progressive People's Congress (APC) defeated Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) in the March 2023 general elections.
The new government of Tinubu will face so many challenges but the major ones include insecurity, unemployment, University strikes due to the breaking of promises to lecturers, economic, inflation and poverty.
