Beirut (IP) - Nawaf Salam, a former Lebanese ambassador diplomat and candidate for the post of Prime Minister of Lebanon, has won the majority vote of the parliament to form a new government.

Iran Press/West Asia: Nawaf Salam has won 73 votes from parliamentarians, surpassing Najib Mikati, obtaining the necessary votes to assume the post of Prime Minister and be assigned to form a cabinet.

Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Fouad Makhzoumi, an opposition Hezbollah representative, are the other candidates for the post of Prime Minister of Lebanon who did not receive the necessary votes.

Fouad Makhzoumi, a member of the opposition faction in the Lebanese parliament, withdrew his candidacy for the post of Prime Minister of the country, thus paving the way for the election of Nawaf Salam.

Makhzoumi wrote in a post on the social network "X" (formerly Twitter): "The representatives of the opposition faction and some independent representatives in parliament gave me the honor of running for prime minister to take responsibility for saving Lebanon's history in the current decisive circumstances, and this made me the strongest candidate to compete with the ruling coalition's candidate."

At the same time, some Lebanese sources reported that members of the Hezbollah and Amal factions in the Lebanese parliament asked President Joseph Aoun to postpone the meeting to elect the prime minister in parliament.

This parliamentary vote was held four days after Joseph Aoun was elected as the president of Lebanon.

In Lebanon, due to cultural and religious diversity, the power-sharing system is based on consensus between different groups. The president of Lebanon must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister is elected from among the Sunnis, and the speaker of parliament must be from among the Shiites; this structure is designed to maintain balance and prevent discrimination among different groups in Lebanese society.
