Athens (IP) - Followers of Imam Hussain (A.S.) in Athens, the capital city of Greece staged a rally and observed Muharram mourning rituals.

Iran Press/Europe: Like other parts of the world, in Greece, the country of philosophy, Muharram mourning rituals were observed with great devotion and in memory of the eternal sacrifice of Imam Hussain (AS) for justice and love.

The annual procession was held in Athens, the capital of Greece, in commemoration of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions in Karbala.

The mourners of Imam Hussain stage a mourning rally from Omonia Square to Syntagma Square in Athens, mourners beat their chests and chant soul-stirring elegies to express their grief for Imam Hussain's martyrdom in Persian and Ordu Language lamentations.

Imam Hussain Mourner then continued their rituals at Syntagma Square, the main square of Athens in front of the Greek Parliament.

In the event, the participants held the 'Flag of Abbas (AS) Alamdar' (the flag bearer of Imam Hussein); the traditional Tazia (Theater reenactment of Karbala Tragedies and events), and cradles were brought in the rituals to remind the sacrifice of the youngest martyr of Karbala Hazrat Ali Asghar (AS), Imam Hussain's 6-month-old baby.

Mourners from Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, India, and other countries residing in Greece participated in the procession.

Imam Hussain (AS), the third Imam of Shia Muslims, was martyred along with his companions during the Battle of Karbala on Ashura day, Muharram 10, 61 AH (680 CE).

The Day of Ashura is the anniversary of the Battle of Karbala, when the 3rd Shia Imam, Hussein ibn Ali, a grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred by the forces of the self-proclaimed caliph of the time, is marked across the world especially in Iraq and across Iran.

Today (Monday, Jul 15, 2024) coincides with the ninth day of Muharram called Tasu'a a day before Ashura, the martyrdom of Imam Hussain in Karbala.

The Battle of Karbala was fought on 10 October 680 (10 Muharram in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar) between the army of the tyrant of time the second Umayyad caliph 'Yazid I' and Imam Hussain, the third Imam of Shias (Husayn Ibn Ali) at Karbala which is located in southern Iraq.

Imam Hussain (AS), the third Imam of Shia Muslims, was martyred along with his companions during the Battle of Karbala.
