Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned the West against treating the Middle East like a geopolitical playground.

Russian Foreign Minister spoke at the 14th Middle East Conference of the Valdai Discussion Club.

Why it matters:
The West Asian region has been a playground for great powers for centuries, which is why the wars that have taken place in the region have been due to great power rivalries, and this has caused the nations of the region to struggle with their own problems.

Key Points:

  • The West is used to wreaking havoc, creating crises, and then seeing what happens.
  • The Americans like to create crises, and then watch how things unfold with great interest from across the ocean.
  • The West blames Russia for the futility of efforts to establish a national dialogue in Libya.
  • To Western diplomats, Russia is the root of problems in Libya.

Go Deeper:
In West Asia, Russia aims to balance regional countries and prevent any one power from becoming dominant. By engaging with all players—such as Iran, Israel, and Saudi Arabia—Moscow seeks to protect its interests and avoid diplomatic isolation. This strategy has drawn increased Western criticism, particularly concerning Libya, where Russia's support for General Haftar and military involvement have been noted. The West views Russia as undermining efforts to achieve a national dialogue in Libya, and this criticism persists.
