IP - Thomas White, the director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip, says that a building complex sheltering tens of thousands of displaced people in Khan Younis has caught fire after it was hit amid escalating fighting.

Iran Press/ West Asia: “Safe access to or from the centre has been denied for two days,” he said adding that people remain “trapped”.

UNRWA spokesman Adnan Abu Hasna, who is based in Rafah said: "One hour ago, it seems that three shells have been landed inside the … training center of Khan Younis that belongs to UNRWA,” Abu Hasna added that a “building has been set on fire” and that “there are many casualties”.

Abu Hasna told Al Jazeera that UNRWA hoped to get more information within the next hour, noting that it has been trying to send ambulances to the site in coordination with the Israeli army.

He further said that there had been “no” warning before the center was hit.

“We have not been able to get in and from the compound in the last 48 hours because the Israeli tanks actually were very close to the compound,” he said, describing the situation as “very dangerous”.

“We tried to coordinate the exit of the Palestinian internal refugees who take shelter in the site but did not succeed unfortunately in the last 48 hours.”

Abu Hasna said this was far from the first time that a UNRWA facility in Gaza had been hit but noted that it was “maybe the first time that we see such a huge fire”.

“People are screaming, crying, asking for help. We hope that we will not find so many people to have been killed and injured.”

Israeli forces continue tank-and-drone strikes on Khan Younis city with at least 210 people killed over the past 24 hours.

At least 25,700 people have been killed and 63,740 wounded in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization’s regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr Ahmed al-Mandhari, gave a news conference about the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip and said that Israel continues to target health institutions in Gaza.

The situation in the Gaza Strip is catastrophic, and more than 660 attacks on health institutions have been recorded, he said adding that Attacks on health institutions are a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.

Meanwhile, Ilana Stein, Israeli government spokesperson in a briefing said: Commenting on reported ceasefire agreements, Israel will not give up on the destruction of Hamas, the return of all the hostages, and there will be no security threat from Gaza towards Israel."
