The safety of worshippers during the month of Ramadhan has been threatened as a London mosque was locked down after a shot was fired by the masked gunman during Ramadhan prayers on Thursday.

Iran Press/Europe: Armed police were scrambled to an east London mosque on Thursday night after a 'masked' gunman entered the building during Ramadhan prayers before discharging a firearm outside.

The incident at the Seven Kings Mosque in Ilford comes two months after the Christchurch massacre and raised fears of a copycat attack in the British capital, reported Iran Press citing the Daily Telegraph.

Worshippers were part-way through evening prayers late on Thursday when the sound of a gunshot rang out.

A man, said to have had his face covered, was reported to have entered the mosque on High Road, but was made to leave before firing the gun.

Scotland Yard said early investigations suggested that a 'blank firing handgun' had been discharged.

No injuries or damage to the building were reported and detectives were not treating the incident as terrorism-related, the force said.

The incident comes amid heightened concerns over the safety of worshippers during the month of Ramadhan.

This is not the first time that such events have happened in Britain. Earlier on March 23, 5 mosques in Birmingham were attacked and one man was in custody after police made two arrests over attacks.

Also on March 16, Two thugs armed with hammer attacked a Muslim worshipper near a mosque in White chapel, East London.

The shocking assault also took place just hours after dozens of people were killed at two mosques in New Zealand by white supremacists on March 15. According to New Zealand Police the mass shooting left 50 people dead.105/203/213
