Lebanese protest against financial and monetary policies

Lebanese started a large-scale protest in several cities of the country amid crash in local currency and a surge in food prices.

Iran PressMiddle East: The clashes between protesters and security forces broke out in different cities of Lebanon including Beirut, Tripoli and Southern Sidon on Monday night.

In Tripoli, young protesters smashed the fronts of local banks and set fire to an army vehicle, as the protests turned into riots.

The new wave of protests began last week in Lebanon with the easing the weeks-long lock down by the government to limit the spread of the new Coronavirus.

So far, 710 Coronavirus cases and 24 deaths have been reported in Lebanon.

So far, the Lebanese government has sought technical assistance from the IMF but has not moved towards accepting any official plan, which would likely include a series of unpopular austerity measures like tax hikes and cuts in subsidies.
