Iran Press/ Europe: Hundreds of people gathered in one of the city's central squares in Rome on Saturday, calling the right-wing Italian government's budget bill unfair and anti-employment and declaring that the legislation will further expand social inequalities.
Holding placards, "The nation is hungry" and "The cost of electricity, gas and living expenses must be reduced," they protested the austerity measures of the right-wing Italian government.
In the gathering, Maurizio Landini, the secretary general of the most prominent Italian trade union confederation known as CGIL, criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and said: "In the budget of the following year, the government is not only not helping the people with low income, as the primary taxpayers, but also It is thinking of removing the basic incomes, which is a crucial allowance for the needy people.
"We are protesting against the Meloni government's budget plan, which does not allocate a single euro to the working class people," one of the protestors told IranPress. "People are unable to pay their electricity and gas bills and cannot cover their expenses, and in such a difficult economic condition, the government allocates available credits to capitalists and those who evade taxes," he added. With the help of the two trade unions CGIL and UIL, the transport, health, administration, and bank sectors went on strike in 11 Italian provinces on Saturday. Nine other regions were on a general strike last week.
Two weeks ago, tens of thousands of people in Italy went on strike with the support of several trade unions.
