Iran's Deputy Minister of Justice announced the transfer of 43 Iranian prisoners from Iraqi prisons to Iran to complete their sentences.

Why it matters:

Transferring prisoners allows Iranian nationals to serve their sentences in Iran's legal and social systems, potentially improving rehabilitation and psychological well-being through familial proximity.

The big picture:

As part of the implementation of the prisoner swap deal between Iran and Iraq, 20 Iranian prisoners in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, including 16 men and 4 women, were returned to Iran on March 27, 2025, to continue serving their sentences.

What he's saying:

Following legal procedures, 23 Iranian detainees were transferred from Sulaymaniyah prisons, according to Iran's Deputy Minister of Justice for Human Rights and International Affairs, Askar Jalalian, on Saturday.
