Iran Press/West Asia: Pezeshkian departed from Basra International Airport with a formal farewell from Iraqi officials, including Governor Asaad Al-Eidani and members of the Iranian consulate.
Pezeshkian's visit marks a historic occasion as he is the first Iranian president to travel to Basra. His visit was warmly welcomed by locals, tribal leaders, academics, and representatives from various non-governmental organizations in the region.
The president arrived at Baghdad International Airport early Wednesday morning, September 11, 2024, leading a high-ranking political and economic delegation. He was greeted with an official welcome by Iraq's Prime Minister.
During his visit, Pezeshkian paid his respects at the memorial of martyrs of the resistance, including General Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.On the first day of his trip, he met separately with Iraq's president, prime minister, head of the Supreme Judicial Council, leaders of Iraq’s Shia political coalition, and the first deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament.
Pezeshkian also held meetings with the Iranian community in Baghdad, as well as business leaders and economic figures, and made a pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Imam al-Jawad in Kadhimiya.On the second day, the president traveled to Erbil and Sulaymaniyah to meet with officials from Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. He then visited the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, where he paid his respects at the revered Shia shrines.
