Tokyo(IP): A 57 kg Iranian freestyle wrestler reached the semi-final of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a brilliant victory over an opponent from Mongolia.

Iran PressAsia: Freestyle wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics kicked off on August 4, 2021 and will continue until August 7, 2021. The preliminary fights of 2 weights of 57 kg and 86 kg started today (Wednesday) at 6:30 local time.

In the 57 kg weight category, Reza Atri competed in the first round against Suleiman Atli, the holder of world silver and bronze and the European Championship's gold from Turkey. Atri presented his wrestling with a plan and without mistakes; while the wrestling was being followed very sensitively, he defeated his stubborn opponent with a result of 3: 2 and advanced to the next round.

At this stage, Atri went against Erdenebat Bekhbayar, the holder of the world bronze medal and gold medal of the Asian Games from Mongolia, who defeated his opponent 5 to 1 with a mistake and reached the semi-finals.

In the semi-finals, Atri will face the winner of the world championship's gold, European bronze, and two world junior gold medals from Russia, and Ghulam Jan Abdullayev of Uzbekistan.

In the 86kg weight class, Hassan Yazdani defeated Uzbekistan's Jawaril Shapiev 11-2 in the first round to advance to the quarterfinals. The world and Olympic champion went on to face world bronze medalist Stefan Reichmuth of Switzerland, who defeated him 12-1 in less than two minutes.

Yazdani will face Russia's Artur Naifonov (World Championship bronze medalist / 3 European Championship golds / World bronze medalist) this afternoon in the semifinals.
