In a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Paris Olympics, Iran's taekwondo athlete Mehran Barkhordari achieved a remarkable victory against Italy's Simone Alessio in the men's -80 kg category.

Iran PressEurope: Alessio, who holds the top world ranking and boasts an impressive record of two World Championship golds, three European Championship golds, and three Grand Prix golds, was seen as a formidable opponent.

The match began with Barkhordari losing the first round 6-1, but he made a strong comeback in the second round, defeating the renowned Italian fighter 2-1, which pushed the bout into a decisive third round. Barkhordari initially took a 3-0 lead, but the tension escalated as the round progressed, with Alessio edging ahead 9-8.

In the final seconds, Barkhordari landed a decisive blow, turning the score in his favor to win 10-9, securing a 2-1 victory.

Earlier in the competition, Barkhordari had defeated Jasurbek Jaysunov, the 2023 Asian Champion from Uzbekistan, in a 2-1 decision during the preliminary round, which earned him a spot in the semifinals.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Iran's taekwondo team, which has already seen success in the Paris Olympics. So far, Mobina Nematzadeh has earned a bronze medal, while Nahid Kiani secured a silver. Barkhordari, as Iran's first male representative in taekwondo at these Games, now has his sights set on winning the Olympic gold.
