Iran's President Massoud Pezeshkian, on the last day of his trip to Iraq, arrived in Basra and was welcomed by the governor.

Iran Press/West Asia: Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to meet with cultural, religious, and academic elites and a group of Basra nomads.

Pezeshkian's trip began earlier this week with meetings in the Iraqi capital, where he met his Iraqi counterpart, President Abdul Latif Rashid, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani. At a joint press conference, Pezeshkian underscored the need to swiftly implement security agreements between Iran and Iraq, particularly focusing on enhancing regional cooperation.

The Iranian president is leading a high-level delegation of political and economic officials, reflecting the importance of this state visit in boosting bilateral ties. He also plans to visit holy sites in Najaf and Karbala, including the shrines of Imam Ali (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS), before touring Iranian-run development projects in the southern city of Basra.

Significance of Basra for Iran

The presence of Iran in Basra has become significant for many reasons and this is due to the desire of the people and nomads of Basra as the Islamic Republic of Iran has shown that it has been the most reliable friend of Iraq during the last 20 years since the fall of the Saddam's regime.

Ali Abedi, Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Basra, announced during a news interview today that the visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Basra Province holds strategic significance.
