At a UN Security Council meeting on the Middle East, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, underscored Iran's unwavering support for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and self-determination. Stressing the importance of a Syrian-led political process under UN guidance, Iravani condemned Israeli aggression against Syria and called for an end to unilateral sanctions that exacerbate the country’s humanitarian crisis.

Iran Press/America: In his detailed remarks,  Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani reiterated that the future of Syria must be determined solely by its people through a comprehensive and inclusive process, free from external interference. He stressed that such efforts should align with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 (2015), emphasizing the drafting of a new constitution through a representative Constitutional Committee and the formation of an inclusive government that reflects the aspirations of all Syrians.

“The unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria are non-negotiable. Preserving these principles is crucial for peace and stability in the region,” Iravani stated. He commended the constructive efforts of UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen in facilitating a political resolution to the crisis.

Institutional Stability and Reconstruction

Iravani emphasized the critical importance of maintaining Syria’s state institutions to prevent further fragmentation, a worsening humanitarian crisis, and the exploitation of instability by extremist groups. “The international community must support the resilience of Syria’s institutions, which are vital for delivering essential services, upholding the rule of law, and fostering trust among the population,” he added.

The Iranian envoy highlighted the need for urgent economic and humanitarian measures, including rebuilding critical infrastructure, restoring public services, and ensuring the safe return of refugees and displaced persons. He called on the international community to prioritize humanitarian assistance and strongly criticized unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria. “These inhumane and illegal sanctions disproportionately harm the most vulnerable, worsen the economic crisis, and violate the fundamental rights of the Syrian people,” he stated.

Condemnation of Israeli Aggression

A significant part of Iravani’s speech focused on condemning Israel’s continued violations of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity. He accused Israel of exploiting Syria’s ongoing crisis for political gains while systematically targeting the country’s infrastructure. “The Israeli regime’s aggressive actions are a flagrant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 350 (1974),” Iravani asserted.

He called on the Security Council to take decisive action to end Israeli aggression and occupation of Syrian territories, expressing Iran’s full support for UN peacekeeping forces in carrying out their mission.

Iran’s Role in Combating Terrorism

Iravani underlined Iran’s pivotal role in combating terrorism in Syria and the broader region. He reminded the Council of Iran’s substantial sacrifices in the fight against ISIS and other extremist groups. “At the request of the legitimate Syrian government, Iran provided support that was instrumental in preventing Syria from falling under the control of ISIS. Without these efforts, the terrorist group’s influence would likely have spread to Lebanon and beyond,” he stated.

The Iranian envoy also highlighted the contributions of Hezbollah, emphasizing that these joint efforts played a critical role in ending ISIS’s dominance in Iraq and Syria.

Syria’s Regional Role and Iran-Syria Relations

Iravani underscored Syria’s importance as a pivotal country in the region, stressing the need for it to reclaim its role in promoting peace and stability, free from terrorism and foreign interference. “The Syrian people deserve peace, dignity, and the opportunity to rebuild their nation without external pressure,” he noted.

The Iranian representative reaffirmed the historic and friendly relations between Iran and Syria, which he described as rooted in shared interests and principles of international law. He pledged Iran’s continued cooperation with the UN, regional partners, and the Syrian people to achieve sustainable peace and stability.

Key Messages to the International Community

Concluding his remarks, Iravani urged the international community to unite in supporting Syria’s sovereignty, reconstruction, and the realization of its people’s rights and aspirations. He stressed that maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity and respecting its sovereignty are essential for regional peace and security.

“The international community must act collectively to help Syria overcome its challenges and restore its rightful place in the region,” Iravani concluded.
