Tehran (IP) – The Islamic Republic of Iran is playing a leading role in both maritime security and humanitarian initiatives within the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS), according to Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, Commander of the Iranian Navy.

Iran PressIran news: Speaking on the sidelines of the 2024 IONS Combined Maritime Exercise (IMEX 2024), Admiral Irani emphasized Iran’s commitment to its responsibilities within IONS. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is in charge of two crucial committees—maritime security and humanitarian actions—and we are fulfilling these duties effectively," he told reporters.

The admiral highlighted the active participation of several IONS member countries, with some sending naval units and observers to the event, while others joined remotely. The exercise, aimed at enhancing maritime security and protecting global trade routes, represents a significant collaboration among member states.

“We will certainly share valuable experiences with IONS members, as part of Iran's innovative initiatives,” Admiral Irani added, underlining the importance of the exercise in fostering cooperation among naval forces.

He further noted the pivotal role played by both the Iranian Navy and the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) in securing the northern Indian Ocean, ensuring the safety of shipping lanes and the nation's commercial fleet. "We are maintaining the economic lifeline of the country with strength, and we are ready to assist any vessels navigating through these waters if help is needed," he stated.

Admiral Irani emphasized that Iran's presence in the region serves as a stabilizing force. "Our mere presence at sea contributes to security, and by the grace of God, the shipping lanes remain fully protected," he concluded.
