Iran has been recognized as the first country in the Eastern Mediterranean region to establish a network of healthy cities, according to Dr. Hanan Balkhi, Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean at the World Health Organization (WHO).

Iran Press/Iran News:  During a ceremony marking the inclusion of Maragheh—a city in East Azarbaijan Province, northwest Iran—into the Global Healthy Cities Network, Dr. Balkhi highlighted that Maragheh is the second Iranian city, following Sahand, to achieve this designation. "Healthy cities empower human communities and promote sustainable development," she stated.

Dr. Balkhi also explained that the initiative prioritizes networking and sustainable development indicators, noting that only 22 cities worldwide are part of the Global Healthy Cities Network. Iran’s successful establishment of this framework marks a milestone for the region.

Iran's Minister of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education, Dr. Alireza Zali, emphasized the role of healthy provinces and cities in enhancing economic conditions, business environments, and, consequently, the physical and mental well-being of individuals. He expressed readiness to expand the number of healthy cities across the country through collaboration with officials and by influencing health metrics. Dr. Zali also extended gratitude to the WHO for its international support and the sharing of best practices.

This recognition underscores Iran’s commitment to improving urban health and sustainable development, setting an example for neighboring countries in the region.
