Tehran (IP) - Iran began the Rotavirus vaccination national plan in an inauguration ceremony in tehran on Tuesday with the participation of the relevant officials including the Deputy Minister of Health Alireza Raisi.

Iran Press/Iran news: Rotaviruses are the most common cause of diarrhoeal disease among infants and young children. Immunity develops with each infection, so subsequent infections are less severe. Adults are rarely affected.

Raisi announced at the ceremony that an adequate amount of the Rotavirus vaccine has been distributed among the provinces, which can prevent the occurrence of gastrointestinal diseases and diarrhea as one of the causes of child mortality.

The vaccination program in Iran began with 7 vaccines in 1974 with the aim of providing equal access to healthcare services for all children.

As a background, the deputy health minister noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran was among the world's three pioneer countries in the region to accomplish the confirmation certificating it eliminated measles and rubella in 2019. 

The number of infections caused by rotavirus diarrhea in Iran is about 4 million cases per year, about 172,000 of which lead to hospitalizations.

Approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), the Rotavirus oral vaccine is given to infants in 3 times at the ages of 2, 4, and 6 months.

Nearly, every child in the world is infected with rotavirus at least once by the age of five.
