Iran supports alignment of Afghan political factions: Zarif

Tehran (IP)- Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed that Iran supports the alignment of all Afghan factions, and progress in Afghanistan political arena is the result of dialogue.

Iran PressAsia: Following the political agreement between the Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and the chairman of Afghan Supreme National Reconciliation Council Abdullah Abdullah, Mohammad Javad Zarif called on Sunday the two Afghan officials and welcomed the progress in the national peace process in Afghanistan.

Zarif said that progress in Afghanistan political arena is the result of dialogue and express Iran's consent over the alignment of all Afghanistan political factions.

Earlier on Sunday, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman welcomed the agreement between the two officials and declared Iran's readiness to provide help in the process of Intra-Afghan political dialogues.

The political crisis caused by the Afghan presidential election, in which the country's election commission declared Ashraf Ghani president on January 20, was not accepted by Abdullah and was rejected.

On March 9, Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah held simultaneous inauguration ceremonies at the presidential and Sepidar palaces with their supporters, effectively giving Afghanistan two presidents and a parallel government.

Today, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and  Abdullah Abdullah signed a power-sharing deal, ending a bitter months-long feud that plunged the country into a political crisis.

The breakthrough comes as Afghanistan battles a series of crises, including a rapid spread of the deadly coronavirus and surging militant violence that saw dozens killed in brutal attacks last week.
