Iran Press/Iran news: Tusday, 10 September 2019, corresponding to 10 Muharram 1441 on the Islamic lunar calendar, is the day of A'shura, the anniversary of the martyrdom of the Chief of Martyrs, Imam Hussein (AS), the younger grandson of Prophet Mohammad (Blessings of God upon him and his progeny).
According to Iran Press reporters, Iranian Shia Muslims, dressing in black, hold mourning rituals to remember Imam Hussein (AS), who was martyred along with his 72 companions in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, in 680 AD after fighting courageously for justice against thousands of soldiers of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.
Devout and faithful Muslims in nearly all of the cities of the Islamic republic of Iran, namely as Tehran, Tabriz, Ahwaz, Mahshad etc..., mourn the martyrdom of Chief of Martyrs Aba Abdollah al-Hussein by attending mosques and Husseiniyehs during the month of Muharram, particularly on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, that is the day of Ta'sua and the day of A'shura.
Eulogy, rhythmical beating of the chest, and self-flagellation using chains are all very common forms of mourning for the Chief of Martyrs Imam Hussein (AS).
Meanwhile, benefactors distribute votive food, known generically as Nazri.
Shia Muslims across the world also observe the mourning rituals, while hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from Iran and other countries head to the holy Iraqi city of Karbala and Imam Hussein (AS)’s holy shrine to mark Ashura.
The Muharram ceremonies symbolize the eternal and unwavering stance of truth against falsehood and humanity’s struggle against injustice, tyranny and oppression, the cause for which Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred.
