Iranian President Hassan Rouhani met on Monday with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdel Mahdi in Tehran.

Iran Press/Iran news: The two sides discussed means of promoting relations between the two countries, as well as the latest developments in the Middle East region and ways to settle the issue of the imounded British-flagged oil tanker Stena Impero in the key shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz last Friday.

It is the second time that Abdel Mahdi is visiting Iran since he took over as prime minister in October 2018. He first visited Iran in early April.

According to the Iraqi prime minister office, the Iraqi premier's visit to Tehran is taking place at the official invitation of the Iranian authorities.

He is also scheduled to meet with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Earlier in the day, Abdel Mahdi had a phone call with British Defense Secretary Penny Mordaunt over tensions in the Middle East region.

The phone call came after Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) imponded the British oil tanker “Stena Impero” in the Strait of Hormuz because of the oil tanker’s failure to respect the international maritime rules while passing through the strait.
