Brigadier General Hossein Salami replaced Mohammad Ali Jafari as the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) top commander.

Iran Press/Iran news: The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in a decree on Sunday appointed Brigadier General Hossein Salami as the top commander of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC).

He had served as deputy head of the corps for nine years.

The Leader asked the new top commander to continue the path of Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari and enhance the IRGC's all-out capabilities and preparedness in all sectors, develop spirituality and expertise and boost cultural promotion.

Following the Leader’s decree, Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani has congratulated Brigadier General Hossein Salami on his appointment as the chief commander of the IRGC.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif also issued a message addressed at Major General Hossein Salami, congratulating him on the appointment.

“I congratulate you on your appointment as the chief commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps on the auspicious day of the middle of [the lunar month of] Sha’ban, and wish you success and great achievement in this great position,” Zarif said.

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani also felicitated Major General Hossein Salami on his appointment as the chief commander of the IRGC, lauding his knowledge and successful experiences in various managerial fields within the IRGC as well as his revolutionary conduct.

Hossein Salami was born in 1960 in Golpayegan, Isfahan province, Iran. In 1978, he was accepted in the mechanical engineering department at the Iran University of Science and Technology.

When the Iran–Iraq War started, Salami joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. After the war, he continued his study and graduated with a Master's degree in defense management.

Commander of IRGC University of Command and Staff (1992–1997).

Operations deputy of IRGC Joint Staff (1997–2005).

Commander of IRGC Air Force (2005 – October 2009)
