Iran hosted a Nowruz ceremony at the United Nations Offices in Vienna Austria on Thursday.

Iran Press/EuropeCountries celebrating Nowruz or the Persian New Year gathered at a special UN ceremony hosted by Iran in the Austrian capital, Vienna on Thursday.

According to an Iran Press report, representative of 12 countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan,  Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, India, Pakistan, Iraq, and Turkey took part in the event. The ceremony was also attended by heads and representatives of international bodies as well as residing diplomats and ambassadors in Vienna.

The permanent representative of Iran at the United Nations in Vienna, Kazem Gharibabadi and Director-General of the UN Offices in Vienna, Yuri Fedotov and the representative of the Austrian Foreign ministry emphasized the significance of  Nowruz (the day celebrating the arrival of the spring season) as the common cultural event for various countries and nations so that it serves as the symbol of sustainability and peace.

Fedotov also shared the words of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres marking Nowruz, who called the day a 'chance to renew our pledge for peace, friendship, human rights, and human dignity'.

Nowruz is the name of the Iranian New Year, also known as the Persian New Year, which is celebrated worldwide by various ethnolinguistic groups. Despite its Iranian and Zoroastrian origins, Nowruz has been celebrated by diverse communities worldwide, mainly in the Middle East, Asia and parts of Southeastern Europe. 

It is recognized by 12 countries of the world 9 of which including Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Albania and Kazakhstan have registered it officially in their calendar as an official holiday. 

International Nowruz Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, in its resolution A/RES/64/253 of 2010, at the initiative of several countries that share this holiday.  103/211/203
