Iran's Foreign Minister in a meeting with Geir Pedersen, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, called for a more active role of this international organization in lifting US unilateral sanctions against the Syrian people.

Iran PressAmerica: During the meeting, Amirabdollahian said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes the efforts of the United Nations and its measures to help preserve Syria's territorial integrity, national sovereignty and the return of sustainable security to this country."

Criticizing and condemning US sanctions against Syria, Amirabdollahian stated that the United Nations is expected to play a more active role in lifting the oppressive sanctions that target the Syrian people.

The Iranian foreign minister also referred to the illegal presence of the United States and its allies in Syria and said: "The occupation, the presence and intervention of the forces of some countries without the will and invitation of the Syrian government and people, has exacerbated the crisis in this country."

He went on to say, "Iran continues to defend Syria and its security in the region with great power," adding, "Tehran supports the UN's constructive efforts to assist Syria and emphasizes impartial judgment on Syria."
