Iran Press/ Europe: The chief prosecutor of the world’s top war crimes court sought arrest warrants Monday for Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu over actions taken during Gaza's seven-month war.
The applications will be reviewed by ICC judges, who will determine whether the standard for the issuance of arrest warrants has been met amid Israel's ongoing war in Gaza.
If such warrants are issued, however, members of the court, which includes nearly all countries of the European Union, could be put in a diplomatically difficult position.
"France supports the International Criminal Court, its independence and the fight against impunity in all situations", the foreign ministry said in a statement late on Monday.
While U.S. President Joe Biden called the legal step against Israeli officials "outrageous", the French foreign ministry took a different stance.
"Today we once again underline that international law and the laws of armed conflict apply to all," Khan said in a statement. "No foot soldier, no commander, no civilian leader — no one — can act with impunity. Nothing can justify wilfully depriving human beings, including so many women and children, the basic necessities required for life. Nothing can justify the taking of hostages or the targeting of civilians."
