Rome (IP) - A 24-hour strike by public and private workers in Italy has brought large parts of the country's economy to a standstill in protest of the critical economic situation.

Iran PressEurope: On Friday, nearly 60,000 people gathered in one of Rome's main squares to protest the economic plan of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government. Unions are criticizing Italy’s 2024 budget, saying it fails to address the country’s main challenges and does not plan enough investments in crucial sectors such as health care and education.

In an interview with Iran Press in Rome, one of the demonstrators criticized the reduction of public expenses and the financial credit allocated to social welfare in Italy's next year's budget, stating: "We went on strike and gathered in opposition to Meloni's government."

The protester added that access to timely medical care is a major concern, with long wait times for essential tests.

Retirees also voiced their grievances, with one woman stating: "After a lifetime of working, the salaries they give us are very low and not enough for us. If they increase our pensions, we can live a little better."

An Italian employee also highlighted the issue of stagnant wages, saying that salaries have not been increased for several years while poverty continues to rise.

The nationwide demonstration and strike were initiated by major labor unions and saw protests held in other major Italian cities alongside the large gathering in Rome. Last Saturday, tens of thousands of people protested against the reduction of public spending, especially in the health sector. 219
