Tehran (IP) - On Saturday's phone call, the Iranian Foreign Minister stressed Iran's serious demand for its water rights in the shared Hirmand River in the conversation with the Taliban acting Foreign Minister.

Iran PressIran news: Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a phone call with Amir Khan Muttaqi referred to the recent visit of the Iranian technical delegation to Afghanistan for an investigation of the shortage of Hirmand water rights and expressed hope that such visits, which are taking place in accordance with the 1973 Hirmand Water Treaty, would help more transparency in the issue.

In mid-Aqust, an Iranian technical delegation visited the upstream water measuring station of the Kajaki Dam on the Hirmand River.

This was the first time the Iranian delegation visited the Hirmand River since the establishment of water commissioners and the signing of the Hirmand-River Water Treaty in 1972.    

Under the 1972 Hirmand-River Water Treaty, Iran is entitled to 820 million cubic meters of water per year, equal to about 26 cubic meters per second, subject to monthly and seasonal fluctuations.  

Referring to the large number of Afghan nationals residing in Iran, he added that Iran emphasizes the cooperation of all parties inside Afghanistan in the direction of stability, security, and welfare of the people of that country.

Amir Khan Muttaqi, for his part, expressed gratitude and appreciation to the Islamic Republic of Iran and stated that efforts are underway to resolve certain issues.
