Anti-racism campaigners in the Netherlands are holding a demonstration on the Dam in central Amsterdam on Monday in protest at police violence in the US.

Iran Press/Europe: Thousands of protesters chanting “I can’t breathe” gathered in central Amsterdam on Monday 1 June in solidarity with George Floyd, a black American who died in police custody in the United States last week.

According to Reuters, around 10,000 filled Amsterdam’s Dam square, ignoring calls for social distancing and shouting “Black lives matter” and “No justice, no peace”.

The crowd blocked traffic, but no violence was reported.

Video footage showed a white police officer in Minneapolis kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, 46, for nearly nine minutes last Monday leading to the murder of the African-American in question.

Friday’s protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after he was pinned at the neck by a white Minneapolis police officer.

In recent days security at the White House has been reinforced by the National Guard and additional personnel from the Secret Service and the US Park Police.

Since the beginning of the anti-racism protests in the United States, 1700 people have been arrested in 22 cities.

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in various cities Sunday night for the fifth night to protest the killing of George Floyd by police and the deaths of other blacks in US police custody to protest violence.
