Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi has said US sanctions against Iran are tantamount to crimes against humanity and economic terrorism.

Iran Press/Iran News: Speaking at a press conference in Tabriz in northwestern Iran, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi dismissed Donald Trump's administration claims that foodstuffs and medicines are not sanctioned, saying: "If an Iranian firm decides to import foodstuffs or medicines from abroad, then it would face all sorts of problems, such as being unable to transfer money abroad through Iranian banks. So effectively US sanctions against Iran also encompass food and medicines."

He pointedly added: "US sanctions against Iran contravene international law as well as all human rights conventions and norms."

Right from the beginning, it was obvious that the Trump administration wanted to apply maximum economic pressure on the Iranian people through sanctions, in order to force Tehran to accept the excessive demands of Washington.

In further remarks, Mousavi said according to United Nations Charter, sanctions can only be applied legally by the UN Security Council according to article 41 of United Nations Charter.
