Three-time champions Iran defeated Oman 2-0 to storm into the quarter-finals of the AFC Asian Cup at the Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium on Sunday.

Iran Press/Iran news: Both goals came in the first half and were scored by Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Ashkan Dejagah.

Iran will now play China, who defeated Thailand 2-1 in another encounter played earlier in the evening at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain.

In the match held at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium, Oman striker Muhsen Al Ghassani was brought down in the penalty area in the first minute of the match by Majid Hosseini and Mexican referee César Ramos showed the penalty spot.

The Team Melli continued its control over the match and had several chances to increase the gap during the second half time luck was Oman's side, Iran Press reported.

It is noteworthy that Oman could have scored a goal in the early few minutes after the match had started but the goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand saved the penalty.

With 2-0 results, Iran has now entered the round of 8 in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

The 2019 AFC Asian Cup kicked off in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday evening January 5 and will wrap up on February 1, 2019.
