Iranian presidnet, Hassan Rouhani, described Takfiri terrorism as the biggest threat to Islam's merciful image and said religious leaders carry a very heavy responsibility and duty to present a correct understanding of Islam to the world.

Iran Press/Irannews: President Hassan Rouhani added: "Where ever Muslims live their behaviour, honesty, morals and ethics, and commitment to the promises they make must be such that it becomes in practice a positive advertisement for Islam."

Iranian president, Hassan Rouhani, on Tuesday night in New York met with a group of Muslim community leaders from United States, on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

President Rouhani told prominent Muslims and Muslim community leaders: "You play a very important role in introducing young people, particularly young Muslims, to genuine Islamic culture. Sadly, young Muslims are being attacked by friend and foe alike."

President Rouhani added: "It is our duty to help  the younger generation of Muslims. We must introduce young people to real genuine Islamic culture. By our good and honest deeds, we must become a positive advertisement for Islam".

Elsewhere in his remarks, president Rouhani said Takfiri terrorism today is the biggest threat to Islam's merciful image.  He pointedly added: "Daesh (ISIS ) terrorists didn't just kill innocent people in our region. Their anti-Islamic behaviour and murderous conduct put people off Islam. Daesh terrorists effectively decapitated the belief of individuals and peoples in religion and Islam. This was in fact their greatest crime."

Turning to Syria, the Iranian president said: "Iran played a very important role in the expulsion of various groups of terrorists from Syria.  The future of Syria must be determined by the Syrian people through holding of democratic elections and the votes of the Syrian people."

Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani said on Monday that the danger of Takfiri terrorism is threatening the entire region, and warned of the US and Israel's attempts to sow discord among the regional states.

These remarks came as 29 people were killed and 70 were injured in the Saturday morning attack by terrorist group during the nationwide military parades in Iran's Southwestern city of Ahwaz.

The terrorists attacked the bystanders watching the annual Armed Forces' parades, marking the start of the Sacred Defense Week, commemorating Iranians' sacrifices during the 8 years of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran in 1980s, killing and wounding several people, including innocent women and children.

The Takfiri group was defeated in the Arab countries late last year but has named Iran as the potential target of its acts of terrorism.
