Hirkani forests of the Caspian Sea, was registered as world heritage in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Iran Press/Europe: At the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), presented a report about this broad-leaved forest which is dubbed a natural museum.

Hirkani woods are as old as 40 million years and one of Iran and the world’s most valuable sites, according to Iran Press.

The Hirkani ecosystem is home to 296 species of birds, 98 species of mammals, and 150 native trees and bushes. These forests have different types of vegetation depending on the elevation. Its best-known trees are the rush, oak, alder, elm, ash, and cedar.

This broad-leaved forest is an exclusive ecosystem situated to the south of the Caspian Sea and shared by Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan. 101
