President Rouhani emphases the need to strengthen regional peace, security

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in his speech at the NAM summit in Baku has stressed the need to strengthen regional peace and security, saying he continued with his efforts to unify the countries of the region.

Iran Press/ Commentary: Iranian president Hassan Rouhani, in the 18th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baku, said the way out of the regional crisis is to respect the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of each other and to create a favorable environment for trade, interaction, and dialogue.

In his remarks at the NAM summit, Rouhani raised important points, including regarding America's belligerence which has inflicted billions of dollars of costs on other countries and stated that America's wars had only led to more seditions and terrorism.

"Indeed, unilateral policies of the US, aggravate regional conflicts, the occurrence of wars and lead to increasing violence and disunity in regional and international relations, and of course economic backwardness as well," Rouhani added.

The president noted: "The NAM countries control a vast swathe of the world's territories and natural resources, a sizable portion of the world's population, and given its economic potential and the business potential it can easily transform into a new world powerhouse (a new pole in the world)."

"In the eyes of experts, NAM enjoys significant opportunities to achieve its goals, but due to some factors has failed to make use of these opportunities," the Iranian president added.

A political analyst, Abul Qasem Qasemzadeh, said in this regard: "Although in East Asia, strong regional unions have been formed, due to the crisis and wars in the region, the countries of the region have not been able to enter regional integration through regional accords."

President Rouhani's remarks at the NAM summit in Baku are a reference to the fact that war and occupation and elimination of opportunities for economic growth and development are among the problems that have been imposed on regional countries.

In this regard, the role of the 120-member Non-Aligned Movement to counter these trends is important. The Movement since its founding in 1961, despite the weaknesses that existed on the part of some member states in a general look at the global issues, has tried to play its role by adopting a principled position vis-à-vis international peace and security.
