Members of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee are urging US President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Turkey for the purchase of S-400 anti-aircraft missile defence system from Russia.

Iran PressAmerica: Turkish Defence Ministry announced early on Tuesday that the country had received the second shipment of the Russian S-400 air defence systems, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The House Committee on Foreign Affairs reacted sharply and obliged Trump to impose sanctions through its Twiter account. “President Trump, you must sanction Turkey over its purchase of the S-400 air defence system, as required by US law. Turkey’s interests are best served by a partnership with the United States, not the Kremlin,” it said.

US officials warned that the S-400 could compromise US intelligence and allow Russia to gain information about the F-35’s technology.

The Trump administration last month ejected Turkey from the US-led F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program over the purchase and has further threatened sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).

The pressure is being applied as Turkey and Russia announced they will deepen their defence cooperation following a meeting in Moscow between Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

However, Turkey counters that the S-400 does not pose a threat to the alliance. 205/211/218
