Iran Press/Middle East: "The aggressive behavior of the Erdogan regime clearly shows the Turkish expansionist ambitions in the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic and cannot be justified under any pretext," a source at the Foreign Ministry said, SANA reported.
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that his country launched a long-threatened military operation in northeast Syria.
The offensive comes days after US President Donald Trump announced that American troops would be pulled back from the border area.
However, Trump threatened Turkey over any injuries to US soldiers during the offensive battle saying "If Turkey does anything out of what they should be doing, we will hit them so hard in the economy, suffering them a decimate economy."
Meanwhile, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Turkey must end its offensive, warning no European funding would be granted for a "security zone".
France's European affairs minister said that France, Britain, and Germany had called for the United Nations Security Council to meet to discuss the Turkish offensive.
Germany's Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in a statement Wednesday that "We condemn the Turkish offensive in the northeast of Syria in the strongest possible terms. "
Also, the Arab League (AL) expressed rejection of the ongoing Turkish offensive in northern Syria, saying it violates the sovereignty of the war-torn country, an AL official said on Wednesday.
"Turkey should not carry out such a military operation regardless of the pretexts it uses for justification," AL Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin asked Erdogan to "carefully weigh the situation" in Syria, so as not to "harm the overall efforts to resolve" the crisis, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.
In the statement, the Kremlin also underlined "the importance of ensuring the unity and territorial integrity of Syria and respect for its sovereignty was noted on both sides."
Special Aide on International Affairs of the Islamic Parliament and former Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs in Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Turkish army operation in Northern Syria more complicates the situation.
Hossein Amirabdollahian says that the operation will also make security in the region worse. 101/219
