Iran Press/Europe: British parliament voted by 432 votes to 202 to reject the deal, which sets out the terms of Britain's exit from the EU on 29 March.
"I urge the United Kingdom to clarify its intentions as soon as possible. Time is almost up," European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said according to Iran Press.
European Council President Donald Tusk suggested that the UK should stay in the EU. Tusk said UK remaining within the European Union is the only option ‘if a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal’.
"If a deal is impossible, and no one wants no deal, then who will finally have the courage to say what the only positive solution is?", he tweeted.
German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Tuesday was a "bitter day for Europe".
Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz tweeted: "I regret the outcome of the Brexit vote in the British lower house in London. In any case there will be no renegotiation of the withdrawal agreement."
French President Emmanuel Macron said Britain would be the biggest loser if it crashed out of the EU without a deal.
"It's now up to the British government to say what the next stage is. The EU will remain united and determined to find a deal," the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier said.
Ireland said it would intensify preparations for a no-deal Brexit. "Regrettably, the outcome of tonight's vote increases the risk of a disorderly Brexit. Consequently, the government will continue to intensify preparations for such an outcome," Dublin said in a statement.
Brexit is Britain’s most significant political and economic decision since World War Two. Pro-Europeans fear the departure will weaken the West as it grapples with the US presidency of Donald Trump and growing assertiveness from Russia and China.
EU leaders, who signed off on the Brexit deal in December, have repeatedly said it was the best solution possible because it provided a transition period for businesses to adapt.
May’s deal was defeated by 432 votes to 202 – the largest government defeat since 1924.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has now tabled a vote of no confidence in the government, which could trigger a general election.
The confidence vote is expected to be held at about 1900 GMT on Wednesday. 101/211/
