Iran Press/ Health: As governments around the world close their borders and implement new restrictions in an attempt to contain Omicron, scientists warned that the omicron coronavirus variant seems to be rapidly overtaking delta as the dominant virus strain and appears able to evade some of the protection provided by previous infection or vaccination.
According to local health officials, the omicron variant is driving a “worrying” surge of coronavirus infections in South Africa.
Cases have increased exponentially over the past two weeks, according to South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) Dr. Michelle Groome, who said infections jumped from a weekly average of around 300 new cases a day to 1,000 last week to 3,500 this week.
