Iran Press/ Iran news: Jamshid Nafar stated: "Iran's formal membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is just the beginning of a path and requires the creation of new infrastructure for trade prosperity and economic development."
With its geostrategic position and membership in organizations such as Shanghai, the chairman noted that Iran could make the most of it. Still, some problems, such as sanctions, prevent it from being sufficiently exploited.
The SCO is a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance, announced on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajik, and Uzbekistan.
The Shanghai Co-operation Organisation Charter formally established the organization in June 2002 and entered into force on 19 September 2003.

The SCO currently comprises nine permanent members: China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India, and Iran.
Iran's membership was approved during the 21st summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Three countries, including Afghanistan, Belarus, and Mongolia, have observer status with the SCO. Six countries, including Azerbaijan Republic, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey, and Sri Lanka, are the dialogue partners.
The guests included ASEAN, CIS, the UN, and Turkmenistan, while the Heads of State Council (HSC) is the supreme decision-making body in the SCO; it meets once a year and adopts decisions and guidelines on all essential matters of the organization.
