Iran Press/ Iran News: In an exclusive interview with Iran Press on the sidelines of a meeting of the Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources and Environment Commission to address the latest air pollution issues, Javad Sadatinejad said 19 different organizations are in charge of enforcing the Clean Air Act, which has been in place since 2018 to control air pollution.
Sadatinejad added that considering that the main cause of air pollution is related to the consumption of diesel fuel and mazut in power plants, 4 solutions were considered to reduce air pollution; Reducing domestic and commercial gas consumption, increasing the quality of fuel consumed, obliging the Ministry of Energy to use filters to control fuel quality, and delivering standard diesel fuel to power plants around metropolitan areas to control pollution.
According to him, it was decided that due to the increase in air pollution, the Environment Organization should conduct seasonal inspections of the fuel standard on a weekly basis in tanks, production units, and fuel stations.
The head of the parliament's Agriculture Commission explained that although according to the Ministry of Energy, mazut is not used in power plants around metropolitan areas, but due to the fact that gas consumption has increased compared to previous years, some power plants and industries use it.
He added that there is no choice but to "standardize" the sulfur content of diesel fuel, and the Ministry of Petroleum is in charge of standardizing this fuel; however, it has the same experience with gasoline and should do the same with diesel fuel and mazut.
Javad Sadatinejad said that unfortunately, about 40,000 Iranians die every year due to air pollution, which is somewhat like the death toll of COVID-19, so reducing the pollution requires a national determination.
The meeting of the Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources and Environment Commission with the Mayor of Tehran, the head of the Environment Organization and representatives of the Ministry of Oil, Energy, Rahvar Police, was held on Tuesday in the Islamic Consultative Assembly to address the latest air pollution issues in the Iranian megacities, especially the capital Tehran.
