A new strain of Coronavirus, recently identified in the UK, has been seen in Germany since November, and doctors have identified it in samples from an elderly patient who later died.

Iran Press/Europe:  Specialists at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) were able to determine the virus variant B1.1.7 in samples of the patient who had medical preconditions, the newspaper said, citing the regional ministry of health in the state of Lower Saxony.

The Charité university hospital in Berlin confirms these initial findings, according to Reuters.

Evidence indicates that the new type of Coronavirus, which is spreading rapidly in the UK, is more infectious than other circulating strains and spreads faster, but the disease is not more severe.

The German state of Baden-Württemberg announced last week that local authorities had identified a new type of Coronavirus in an infected person who flew from Britain to Frankfurt on December 20.

The traveler wanted to visit relatives and tested positive upon arrival. The person was picked up from the airport by car by family members and has been isolated at their residence since then.
