Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia must increase its ability to respond to military challenges and even a nuclear attack.

Iran PressEurope: Vladimir Putin on Wednesday 11 November called on Russian military officials to increase their ability to respond to "potential military challenges even in the event of a nuclear attack."

The construction of a nuclear-resistant building in Russia is in progress and near its completion.

"Over the years, important steps have been taken to maintain all command elements of the nuclear strategic force at the highest possible level," Putin said.

Since coming to power, US President Donald Trump has withdrawn or avoided renewing important agreements, including military and arms deals with Russia.

The New Start Treaty, which expires in February 2021, is the latest arms deal between the United States and Russia.

Putin had previously warned that the US withdrawal from the nuclear short-range missile deal was a "big mistake" which poses a risk of a missile arms race and increases the likelihood of confrontation and slipping into uncontrolled tensions.
