Republic of Azerbaijan appreciates Ayatollah Khamenei stance on Karabakh conflict

Republic of Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry appreciated Iran's Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Khamenei's stance for solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Iran PressAsia: Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov Aly Oglu on Tuesday in a phone conversation with Iran's ambassador to Baku Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, expressed his country's appreciation for Ayatollah Khamenei's 'important and fair' remarks on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister said Iran's Leader stance on solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is based on "friendship and brotherhood" between the two neighboring countries, the Iranian embassy in Baku reported.

Khalaf Khalafov noted to the past day's meetings of Seyyed Abbas Araghchi Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister special envoy for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement to the Baku with Azerbaijanis officials as 'important' and welcomed Iran's regional initiative to resolve the Karabakh crisis.

Delivering a live speech on Tuesday, Ayatollah Khamenei described the war in the Nagorno-Karabakh region as a ‘bitter incident,’ calling for an immediate end to hostilities.

In his remarks, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei referred to the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the recent month and said that Karabakh's occupied territories should be liberated.

However, the security of the ethnic Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh region must be protected; Ayatollah Khamenei pointed out.

On September 27, 2020, the conflict between the Armenian and Azerbaijani military forces resumed on the two countries' border.

The conflict between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region began in 1988 and turned into a military conflict in 1992.

As a result of this conflict, Armenian forces took control of the Republic of Azerbaijan's seven cities.

A ceasefire was reached in 1994 with the OSCE Minsk Group mediation, but international efforts to resolve the conflict peacefully have so far been unsuccessful.
